We encourage children to be happy, confident and learn to their best ability and to this end we help them to develop self-confidence, to understand their interdependence on each other and to respect every one of other cultures, beliefs and ways of life.

Our school curriculum is underpinned by the values that we hold as a school: using our STARS vision. Our curriculum is designed to develop intellectual curiosity giving children knowledge, skills and understanding in order to lead fulfilling lives.

Children are taught the core subjects of English (reading and writing), Maths, Science and Computing together with the other foundation subjects via our in house Calton curriculum. All our curriculum planning follows the National Curriculum as outlined by the Department of Education. It includes the ‘hidden curriculum’, or what the children learn from the way they are treated and expected to behave using our school vision.

We aim to teach children how to grow into positive, responsible people, who can work and co-operate with others using restorative practices, whilst developing knowledge, skills and attitudes towards learning, which lay the foundations for lifelong learning. Children are helped to achieve: a healthy lifestyle, to stay safe, to enjoy and achieve, to make a positive contribution and to understand and develop mental and economic well-being.

The planning of the curriculum involves all the staff and co-ordinates their skills, knowledge and experience. We monitor children’s progress and arrange a smooth transition from pre-school, right the way through to the end of Primary School.

At the same time we acknowledge the differing needs of children and allow them to work at a pace which is appropriate to their ability and still challenges them. Children with special educational needs and disabilities are identified as early as possible and the views and experience of Parents and Carers are sought in arranging appropriate support. This is regularly assessed as the child progresses through the school.

While the Head Teacher has the major role in developing and implementing the curriculum, the Governors have a responsibility to monitor its effectiveness. We do this by a regular review of the School Development Plan, by visits to the school and talking to the staff and children. Staff have responsibility for specific subject areas and inform governor meetings on the quality and outcome of children’s work in these areas as they progress through the school. This is monitored termly through staff teams and action plans updated accordingly.
